About Climate Grief

Climate grief is a relatively new area of grief, a term that has only been around for a few years, and is 'illegal' grief, meaning that those who struggle with it receive very little support from the environment, even though many are experiencing real loss as a result of the news of dying ecosystems and species extinction. Others are distressed by the loss of a vision of the future, and also find it difficult to share their concerns with others, since much of society is still in denial.

About the Group

The group starts with a minimum of 4 participants and can accommodate up to 8 people. This ensures that there is time and attention for everyone. The first two sessions are open, after that no new members are allowed to join.

The group is a self-help, peer support group, and all applicants will be contacted in person for a discussion (30 mins or so) before the group starts.

We will meet every two weeks online, using Zoom.

The participation fee is 10 Euros/per session, which can be paid by bank transfer. If you have difficulty paying, please contact me for a special price (which might result in participation for free).

Goals

One of the most important goals is to create a safe, supportive space where we can talk freely about what is inside us, what is difficult, what makes us here. If we can share the difficult things, that in itself gives us some relief.

In addition to experiencing that you are not alone, we will go through the manifestations of climate anxiety, the feelings you may be experiencing, and coping strategies that can help you deal with them. There will be simple exercises or 'challenges' that can be applied immediately, focusing on activities that can be incorporated into your daily routine between two sessions - these are designed to reduce feelings of helplessness and help you prepare and adapt in everyday life.

Given that climate grief is still not understood by many people today, we will also touch on how to communicate concerns and feelings to family and friends.

About Me

My name is Krisztina Csapó, I am a "grief walker" and Grief Educator (certified by David Kessler). As a Deep Adaptation guide and facilitator, and the admin of the Deep Adaptation Hungary Facebook group (with 12,000+ members), I have been supporting people struggling with climate grief and climate anxiety in the spirit of Deep Adaptation. I am convinced that the world as we know it is going to change significantly in a very short time, and not in the direction we dream of. I believe that the destruction of nature and the lost vision of the future are real losses, and the grief felt over them is real, legitimate, and can be dealt with. Those who go through this process not only become more resilient, but can also support those around them in the future when the changes can no longer be denied. With all due respect to those who have the courage to face this.
